Making outer space safe and sustainable

Space is fast turning into a junkyard of human technological waste. Broken satellites, rocket components, collision produced splinter material, leaked fuel, rogue space objects and a variety of earth material. The Low Earth Orbit (LEO) of upto 2000 kms from the ground has turned into indiscriminate dump site. In the meantime, the ‘race to space’ has begun with thousands of new satellites, human travel and business explorations. Huge risks of collisions, safety of operations and disruption to space based services look real. The national OR international regulatory regimes are weak. And efforts to address this mammoth issue are disproportionately low in comparison to the efforts of space explorations and occupation.

Why Space Sustainability Matters

The Growing Threat of Space Debris
With over 128 million objects orbiting Earth at speeds of up to 25,000 km/h, space is becoming increasingly hazardous. Even debris smaller than 10 cm can collide with satellites, disrupting critical services like communication, weather forecasting, and navigation.
The Impact on Everyday Life

Communication Blackouts :
Damaged satellites can interrupt global internet services.
Navigation Failures :
Satellite damage can impact GPS systems, affecting transportation and logistics.
Weather Forecasting & Disaster Management :
A compromised satellite network can delay early warnings for natural disasters.

About

Nabhah Foundation

Nabhah is a non-profit national convergence for strengthening India’s collective endeavours in making outer space safe and sustainable. It brings together cutting-edge concepts, high level experts, institutional efforts, corporate social responsibility and emerging space businesses in mitigating the threat of space debris on space assets and space based ground services. Swacch Aakash is Nabhah’s flagship mission, which aspires to increase space debris surveillance from the ground as well as from space to bring together a cooperative and collaborative mechanism of increasing space safety

Swacch Aakash -
Nabhah's Flagship mission

Swacch Aakash is the technical part of Nabhah’s objectives, namely the development of both ground based and space based infrastructure and generating multiple knowledge derivatives like the enhanced space debris database, delineating safe orbits and promoting good practices in space domain management. Nabhah is the platform on which Swacch Aakash operates as flagship mission

What we do
under Swacch Aakash mission

Through national convergence of efforts and resources, research, and collaboration, Nabhah Foundation is committed to securing a safe and sustainable orbital space for future generations.

Four Verticals of NABHAH’s Swacch Aakash

01

CREATION OF DATABASE

Through self-experience and through collaborations, build a well-populated space objects and space debris database as a long-term foundational asset for our space programme.

02

GROUND BASED TRACKING

Build a robust and dedicated space debris tracking radar and optical system for India, targeting objects of 5 cms and above in the Low Earth Orbit.
03

SPACE BASED TRACKING

Build and launch at first one and then a series of dedicated satellites with sensors (radar and/or optical) in the Low Earth Orbit to detect and track space debris to supplement the ground-based tracking facility.
04

AUTONOMOUS COLLISION AVOIDANCE

Explore the possibilities of AI and ML-based autonomous collision avoidance of satellites through pooled expertise and resources.
